The Wise-Women Discussion Lists

The discussion lists form the heart and soul of our community. Founded in early 1999 by Dori Smith, the lists have nearly 400 active members, with that number growing steadily. Click here for a short history of the group by Dori.

WiseWomen list

WiseWomen is our main discussion list. The purpose of this list is to support women on the web by providing a supportive atmosphere to deal with issues of web development and consulting, including:

  • HTML and Dynamic HTML coding questions, including HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Flash, etc. and server-side issues such as CGI, Perl, Java, PHP, SSI, Cold Fusion, ASP, databases, etc.
  • Web graphics and web design
  • The hardware and software tools required
  • Other web-related technologies such as WAP, XML, PDF, and other alphabet soup
  • Skills improvement
  • Integration of business and social responsibility
  • Starting your consulting business
  • Networking
  • Meta-issues of being a female computer consultant/web developer

This list is only a general guideline. Most members prefer to discuss technical issues, although we often get sidelined on meta-issues as well.

Please note that WiseWomen can be a high-volume list that averages anywhere from 20-50 and more messages per day; if you're unsure about being able to handle the quantity of email this list generates, please consider signing up for the digest version.

WW-Talk

Our off-topic list. Here is where where we talk about issues that are of concern to our members but off-topic for Wise-Women. Recent discussions have ranged from the pros and cons of DSL vs. cable modems, the merits of estrogen therapy, and whether redheads are disadvantaged when it comes to being taken seriously. And yes, even the U.S. elections.

List Administrivia

Please keep the "Welcome" mail you get when you first sign up for future reference!

Please do not send HTML Mail to the lists. HTML mail takes up needless "overhead" and is generally frowned upon, especially on high-volume lists such as WiseWomen. If you need help finding out how to turn off HTML Mail in your mail program, just ask on the lists.

Attachments are not allowed on the lists. The preferred method of showing graphics or other things to each other is to just upload it to our own web sites and post a link to the pertinent URL.

Please try to keep any off-topic discussions on WW-Talk. If you see discussions drifting, just switch over to the Talk list.

Please note that currently the Wise-Women lists are not automatically archived. Therefore it is recommended you keep copies of any mails you wish to refer back to later locally, on your own computer. Click here to read about Project Archive; click here to see our policies regarding archives.

Have a list-related question? It may be already answered in the list FAQ.
